Patience pays off for Tyre in USL run at Creek County Speedway
By John Rittenoure (Richard Bales photo) - KELLYVILLE, Okla. (September 12, 2025) - Fridays opening night of the David Stephenson Classic at Creek County Speedway was a test of unwavering patience and not second guessing yourself. Joshua Tyre applied that for 30 laps to win the Ortco, Inc. United Sprint League presented by Same Day Auto Repair main event.
The victory locked Tyre into a redraw for a guaranteed starting spot in Saturdays 50-lap USL David Stephenson Classic feature paying $5,022 to the winner.
Before Fridays feature Tyre and car owner Kelly Fode talked about their strategy of staying in the bottom groove for the entire 30 laps.
“Kelly (Fode) and I kind of talked about it before hand,” Tyre said of their game plan. “His nephew ran a track in a dwarf car a few weeks ago and did what I did, keeping his composure on the bottom and made it work. I told him I felt it was going to be just like that dwarf car race.”
Sure enough it was. Tyre drove off the pole and led a line of challengers that ran behind him and others who ran up against the wall.
“We made a complete car just for the non-wing deal and three races in we are just now starting to make strides on it,” Tyre said thinking back to a second place run with the car at Creek on August 16.
“We are getting some speed with it. Andrew Deal helped us out with some shocks and stuff. That got us a little more drive off the corner. We definitely needed it tonight.”
Throughout the last half of the race Tyler Edwards stormed around the top pulling even with Tyre at times and was credited with the lead at the start-finish line on six laps.
“I knew he probably was not going to stay too patient on the bottom being that he passed me on the top,” said Tyre. “In my mind I thought he would think it was faster on top so I knew if I stayed on the bottom and stayed consistent he is eventually going to trip up there.
“I stayed to the plan all the way to the end and it worked.”
Edwards tripped up in turn four on lap 19 which forced a restart. Tyre led the final 11 laps to his first career USL victory. Jeffrey Newell made a late run toward the front, coming from 15th starting position, but settled for second. Ty Hulsey, who was on a two race winning streak, battled up front and finished third, Tim Kent worked his way from 18th to fourth, and Cameron Hagin followed from 13th and ended up fifth.
Tyre received a special trophy built by USL car owner and series title sponsor Nick Newton of Ortco, Inc. and wife Ashley Newton. Another trophy will be awarded on Saturday.
